Born in Glassport, Pennsylvania, USA, on December 31, 1946, Duane Tomko is a poker pro and former early series teacher. However, Tomko is known to have won three bracelets in the World Series of Poker series of events. That said, the player is best known for having placed second in the WSOP's $10K No Limit Texas Hold'em tournament, the 1982 Main Event. At the time, Jack Straus took the title. In addition, in 2001, Tomko was also in second place after losing to Carlos Mortensen.

Life

Tomko spent the initial phase of his life in a suburb of Pittsburgh, in Glassport, Pennsylvania, in the United States. The contact with the modality of poker started very early in his life. In his teens, at age 16, Dewey started to make some profit from gambling in Pittsburgh, and that bankrolled his entire educational phase.

During this period, Tomko exercised the profession of teacher of early grades, in kindergarten. At the time, Tomko taught and during the evenings he played poker to have extra income in his account. However, after a while Dewey realized that poker guaranteed him more profitability than his job as a teacher, so Tomko started to invest the money he earned from poker in business, while poker became his main job.

Poker career

Since leaving his teaching profession, Tomko has become very profitable in his poker journey. The pro quickly began to stand out at the gaming tables. In 1979, Tomko was present at the World Series of Poker as part of the $1,000 entry No Limit Hold'em event. At the time, Tomko managed to overcome Duanne Hammrich and pocket the amount of US$48,000.
 
After that, Tomko did not participate in the following editions of the WSOP, returning only in the year 1984. In the year in question, Dewey participated in the $10,000 Deuce to Seven Draw event and was successful in his journey. The next day, Tomko participated in the $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha event and secured the event title. That said, Tomko already had three WSOP bracelets under his belt.
 
In addition to having participated in the WSOP series of events, Tomko has also been present at two editions of the World Poker Tour. At the WPT tables, Tomko took runner-up at the 2003 Five Diamond World Poker Classic for $552,853, and finished fourth in the Costa Rica Classic for $14,650.
 
As early as 2005, Tomko returned to the WSOP tables. This year, Dewey was present at the Deuce To Seven event and ended up winning the bronze medal, earning the sum of US$ 138,160. In addition, the following year Tomko was present at the US$ 50,000 H.O.R.S.E of 2006, and ended up finishing in the seventh position, earning a total of US$ 343,200.

WSOP bracelets

The first WSOP bracelet was won in 1979. At the time, Tomko managed to secure the title of the US$1,000 No Limit Hold'em edition and earned the amount of US$48,000. The second bracelet came in 1984. In this episode, Tomko was present at the $10,000 Deuce to Seven Draw event, and won the title along with the amount of $105,000. Finally, the third bracelet came in the same year, in 1984, in the $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha event, where the player earned $135K for the title.

Fortune

As of 2010, information shows that Tomko has earned more than $4,960,000 from poker. As shown, more than $2 million went to the WSOP alone. All in all, in the year 2008, Dewey was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame for his journey into poker.
